Elsa Freezes out Wincanton!

Mark Neilson2 Mar - 08:41

The cold never bothered them anyway

Berrow girls returned to winning ways against a very physical Wincanton team that have been improving over the season.
There was a doubt about the game going ahead with the overnight frost, but the Red Road pitch thawed out in the morning sunshine setting up what was sure to be a close game.
As in recent weeks the home team started the strongest and created some early half chances. It only took 15 minutes before the deadlock was broken when Holly picked up a through ball to strike it hard and low into the bottom corner to make it 1-0, taking her tally to 30 goals for the season! It didn't take long for the ever reliable Halle to get in on the action. Playing in an unusually deeper, midfield role, Halle was able to get on the ball and show her creativity, and of course her shooting skills. Once again firing a low shot past an unsighted keeper to make it 2-0, With half time approaching it was Holly again who got the third goal , this time from 25 yards out giving the keeper no chance. The opposition Number 9 was a constant threat but Grace again managed to keep her in her pocket for long periods throughout. The defence of Poppy, Brooke and Elsa kept the ball away from Rose in goal for the rest of the half allowing Berrow to go into half time winning 3-0.
The second half saw Wincanton throw everything at the girls, which became to much at times and midway through the second half the got a quick fire brace to bring the scores back to 3-2. Berrow looked flustered, and when pushed deeper towards their own goal for what seemed like and age. Fortunately, the defence continued to hold firm with some miraculous defending from Elsa especially. Mia, Tilly and Halle worked tirelessly in up and down the whole pitch and were relieved to get Maria and Ella in there as extra support to freshen things up. The wing play from Pixie at times was fantastic, she is really growing in confidence, but it was Keira that popped up in the box late on, arriving onto cross into the box and rifling her shot high into the net, 4-2 and the game was done!
What started with a Frozen pitch ended with a glorious morning of sunshine and edge of you seat football. Berrow girls are still top of the league with 5 games to go, and the girls are starting to believe this could really be their year.
Girl of the game went to Elsa who was calm, composed and strong throughout and really lead by example.
Next up Midsomer Norton at home next week, we go again.
